Group Size
Each Community Service project is limited to 10-20 participants, enabling our volunteers to benefit from personal, one-on-one interactions at the service projects. The Project Hawaii program accommodates up to 60 participants, which fosters expanded social interactions and friendships within the group during evening activities and weekend excursions.
Accommodations
During the week, the University of Hawaii at Hilo is our home. Dorm rooms are doubles, with a shared private bathroom connecting two rooms. On the weekends, we travel to neighboring islands, where we stay in beautiful beachfront hotels.
Meals
During the week, the group eats breakfast and dinner together at the University Dining Hall. Lunch is provided at the various service projects. During the travel weekends, we eat 3 meals a day at various restaurants. On occasion we divide into smaller groups allowing teenagers to choose from a greater variety of restaurants.
Staff
Our staff members are teachers and graduate students who are committed to Project Hawaii’s ideals of volunteering and giving back to the community. Rein staff members are always present at each service project. All staff members attend our professional training workshops where the emphasis is placed on the safety and well-being of our teenagers. Program Leaders are trained in Basic First Aid and CPR.
Transportation
Rein Project Hawaii uses bus transportation with professional drivers to transfer our participants to their various projects, activities, and weekend excursions. Teenagers are never transferred in staff driven vans.
Activities
After volunteering each day, Project Hawaii participants can enjoy the campus sports facilities (Olympic-size swimming pool, gym, tennis, basketball, etc.) and computer labs. Afternoon fun also includes local field trips to the rainforest, where we hike to beautiful waterfalls, and visits to Nani Mau Gardens and famous Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory. In the evenings, enjoy everything from nights at the movies to authentic Hawaiian cultural activities. All cultural activities are specially coordinated for Rein Project Hawaii by the Hawaiian EDventure Program at the University of Hawaii. On our weekend excursions, activities include snorkeling, surfing lessons, and visits to visits to black sand beaches, Pearl Harbor and Volcanoes National Park.
Communication
The Rein Summer Communication Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Teenagers are permitted to bring cell phones and will have access to the campus computer labs to check email.
