Living on Campus at the
University of Hawaii at Hilo
Campus Life
After volunteering each day, enjoy our campus amenities, which include an outdoor Olympic-size swimming pool with lifeguard, tennis, basketball & gym, sand volleyball, and private computer lab. Afternoon fun also includes local field trips to the rainforest, where we hike to beautiful waterfalls, exciting trips to Volcanoes National Park and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, and visits to famous Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and Nani Mau Botanical Gardens. In the evenings, enjoy varied activities including authentic Hawaiian cultural activities and nights at the movies.
The group eats breakfast and dinner together at the University Dining Hall. Lunch is provided at the various service projects. During the travel weekends, we eat 3 meals a day at various restaurants. On occasion we divide into smaller groups allowing teenagers to choose from a greater variety of restaurants.
After volunteering each day, Project Hawaii participants can enjoy the campus sports facilities (Olympic-size swimming pool, gym, tennis, basketball, etc.) and computer labs. In the evenings, enjoy nights at the movies and summer festivals, in addition to authentic Hawaiian cultural activities.
Cultural Immersion

One of the most unique aspects of Rein Project Hawaii is our evening Cultural Immersion program taught by local Kapuna (elders). Because Hilo is such an authentic Hawaiian community, it is the perfect place for our teenagers to learn about the culture of Hawaii. Created exclusively for Project Hawaii by the EDventure Program at the University of Hawaii, our Cultural Immersion Program offers our teenagers the opportunity to experience and participate in once-in-a-lifetime, hands-on cultural activities that will serve as treasured memories of their summer spent in Hilo. Our cultural immersion activities include lei making, learning to dance the hula, and playing authentic Hawaiian instruments.
