Life in Hilo
Hilo, Hawaii's second largest city, remains virtually untouched by mass tourism, and exudes more of an "old Hawaii" feel than anywhere else in the state. The resources and revenue that have shaped the better-known resort towns of the Hawaiian Islands have not reached or affected life in Hilo, leaving it charming, friendly and authentically Hawaiian. Hilo is a great place to learn about old Hawaii and the environmental and cultural forces that shaped it - truly a perfect place for Rein Project Hawaii...Aloha!
Group Size
The Project Hawaii program accommodates up to 50 participants, which fosters expanded social interactions and friendships within the group during evening activities and weekend excursions. Each community service project is limited to
10-20 participants, enabling our volunteers to benefit from personal, one-on-one interactions at the service projects
Accommodations
During the week, the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is our home away from home. All rooms are doubles and have private bathrooms, air-conditioning and cable-television. Our participants enjoy hotel amenities, including a swimming pool, full service restaurant, free wifi in the lobby, gift shop and more. Enjoy the banyan tree grounds of the hotel, where the bay laps along the lava rocks, Coconut Island is steps away to explore, and Mauna Kea stands in the distance.
Meals
During the week, our group eats breakfast and dinner together at our hotel’s restaurant. Lunch is provided at the various service projects. During the travel weekends, we eat 3 meals a day at various restaurants. On occasion we divide into smaller groups allowing teenagers to choose from a greater variety of restaurants.
Staff
Our staff members are teachers and graduate students who are committed to Project Hawaii’s ideals of volunteering and giving back to the community. Rein staff members are always present at each service project. All staff members attend our professional training workshops where the emphasis is placed on the safety and well-being of our teenagers. Program Leaders are trained in Basic First Aid and CPR.
Transportation
Rein Project Hawaii uses bus transportation with professional drivers to transfer our participants to their various projects, activities, and weekend excursions.
Activities
After volunteering each day, enjoy different late afternoon options, including relaxing at the pool, exercising at the gym, playing tennis, running along the trails of Liliuokalani Gardens, or using the wifi in the lobby to catch up with family and friends. Afternoon fun also includes local field trips to the rainforest, where we hike to beautiful waterfalls, exciting trips to Volcanoes National Park and Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, and visits to famous Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and Nani Mau Botanical Gardens. In the evenings, enjoy varied activities including authentic Hawaiian cultural activities and nights at the movies. On our weekend excursions, activities include snorkeling, surfing lessons, and trips to Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head
Communication
The Rein Summer Communication Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Teenagers are permitted to bring cell phones and the lobby of our hotel is equipped with wifi.
